I figured this deserved a separate entry.

How have other unclutterers’ (sic?) experiences been with Buy Nothing groups, especially if you’ve had people at your house picking stuff up? My house is next door to a school, so we’ve figured it’s one of the reasons we’ve never had a decent garage sale.

I finally managed to clear out the area underneath the basement stairs so we can take shelter there during tornadoes. Really the most labor intensive part was bringing the five gallon bucket of carpet adhesive up the back stairs to the garage - will have to take that to the hazardous waste disposal center.

Thankfully the Rubbermaid Roughneck was easier to get to the curb. Also placed a couple of metal things for scrappers on top of it. I’ll have to wash the blankets and bolts of fabric that were stored in there, then ask Mom if we could donate some of the blankets. I know she’d allow me to donate the fabric.

Came back from donating a closet organizing kit. The box was damaged during a flood, but I have two weeks to cut it up for recycling.

And the rest was just moving a floor scrubber and other tools to another corner.

So the other large deed I did today was move the clothes racks from the basement upstairs. However, only one of them remained intact for me to still hang items on. The metal pieces of the other one was placed in the alley since the plastic connecting pieces fell apart when I moved the rack towards the back stairs.

I was originally going to contact the people that operate the donation table I mentioned July 29th to see if they wanted at least one of the racks to hang additional clothes on, but now either the city or scrappers will take care of the disassembled one. Ah, well. :/

 Hey folks

My children went back to school this week and I again have Mondays clear to do things.

I was thinking that I would try and do one uncluttering task every week and set an intention for next Monday at the same time

Anyone else in? Obviously you could do a different day

Today I uncluttered our swimming things box and took a bag of outgrown swimming costumes and flotation aids to the charity shop.

Next week I am going to tackle the kids summer clothing

So cleaning- mostly the basement- has basically helped me find a heck of a lot of our tools and battery chargers. The ones I can’t find either the parts for or no longer work have been disassembled and had the internal batteries removed. (The county does offer repair clinics, but those are usually too far away from me.). I’ll drop off the batteries and other hazardous waste at a collection happening in my neighborhood about two weeks from now.

We have a donation table in the neighborhood for clothes and other items that I’ve been leaving items at pretty much all summer. About the only items I’ve taken are a hockey book I haven’t read yet and a Chicago Bears daily calendar from 1990(? I haven’t seen it a while. Maybe Mom tossed it?). Most of the cleaning I’ve done in the garage so far has been sorting through tools and I haven’t done much in any other room since April.

I’ve joined a challenge that runs throughout August to stop food waste in my county and two neighboring ones. Depending on the weather, I’ll relocate some day lilies away from the air conditioner.

pinched from this image on tumblr - I can't tell where it was originally from. There are some, hmmm, I'll go with 'odd' choices in this list but eh, maybe some of you are less attached to 'things not used recently' than I am. :)

Challenge for the weekend, if you have the time an energy - pick one thing from the list and see what you can ditch!

And if you don't have the energy, join me in the comments for commentary on the oddness of some of the list.

What unclutttering have you done recently? Are you feeling pleased with your progress? Tell us so we can congratulate you, and maybe feel inspired. Or are you lack lustre and it is all a drag, but you could do with some motivation? Tell us that, and we can commiserate on the continuing presence of Stuff.

Who knew? Meal planning can go a ways in helping keep a kitchen clean.

Elliot M and I have been working on the fridge. He wiped down a place where a Miscellaneous Substance had oozed out of the produce drawer (possibly from onions), and I washed down the drawer they were in.

We were meal planning, and a stop at the grocery was next, so I went through and cleared out older things that belong in the bin - aging parsley, browning spring onions, something in a jar that expired last year.

Groceries have since been gotten. New produce has been cut into pieces for grazing and kababs, things have been rearranged to better use space, and the fridge is looking much friendlier. I took out a bag of chicken thigh from the freezer to thaw and will see tomorrow if it is, in fact, still good.

Things have been much easier to keep up with after the initial decluttering efforts last year. These occasional lighter edits are keeping everything in shape, and the meal planning means there are regular times to check what's in there, get rid of older stuff, and make plans for what's next so it doesn't re-accumulate.

We're also trying biweekly bulk tea: I used up almost all of a pack of a white mango something-or-other blend for cold tea the next few days. The massive bag is being re-steeped in my nightly pot, so it gets a little more use before being composted. Bulk cold tea is looking more promising in using up the herbals and whites in the infamously over-stocked Tea Drawer(s) than trying to rotate out breakfast cups.

(And a bonus: I saved and planted some seeds from the grocery poblano to try growing. They'll mostly be gifted out, if they sprout and get their true leaves.)

The next cleaning-related goal is... Taking the recycling out in stages. It desperately needs emptying.

(Realizing I never created a post here.)

My main challenge this week has been figuring out if we’re still going to get ice on our sidewalks in the Twin Cities and to clear enough space in our basement storage room to keep the ice melting chemicals until next winter. I learned the difficult way the stuff becomes unusable if I store it in the unheated garage. So I’ve thrown away at least one can of dried latex paint and have one that’s almost dry in the garage. Hopefully, I can find that tool for prying off the lids and let the rest of them dry outside if we can’t find anyone that could use some excess paint.

I also washed our linens and threw away a torn flat sheet. I’ll put away the towels and fitted sheet later today and ask Mom how many flat sheets she wants to keep so I can figure out if we can donate any extras. I also threw out a pajama top that tore as I was trying to put it on, so I’ve technically started to remove clothing from the top of my dresser.

As I sort through our receipts and bills for tax season, I’ll probably have enough paperwork that will be taken to the UPS Store for shredding. I’ve destroyed too many of them over the decades, yet UPS shreds only paper, so I might buy another one for ID cards and other data on plastic.

Update: Went through the paint cans and threw half of them away. Brought the rest of them outside. Also brought a wooden kitchen cart to the curb. Threw clothes down the laundry chute and will clean out a drawer to store pillow cases. Still sorting through paper, but haven’t put away the sheets yet. :/

Second update: Sorted through paperwork and brought a trunk to the curb as well.

... Finally back at the baking to clear out the pantry's generous flour shelf.

I decided to prep dry ingredients for later tonight. The recipes I'm using mix all their dry ingredients first, so everything could go into one bowl.

The whole wheat made it easy for me. I unrolled the top and bugs came out. The bag went into the trash.

Instead I used the last of the Rye to double a recipe for Chinese Almond Cookies. There will be a lot of them, so hopefully they'll be edible.

Next up for the running are spelt and bread flour.

At this point, the surplus flour has been reduced by 50%. Most of what's left are specific-use items (like glutinous rice flour for mochi, and okonomiyaki mix) and local mixed flours. The two remaining big items are masa flours.

Update with recipes and cookie tax

Everything has been made! There are two new packaged, labeled hunks of dough in the freezer. Tasting portions of each batch were baked per how this goes.

A small strawberry print plate with four cookies, with two the same kind each placed diagonal to each other. Two are small, round, and flattened with slightly golden edges, and specks of spice visible on the pale dough. Two are the same diameter, but are large and round. They each have three sliced almonds arranged on top, with a golden halo of eggyolk wash.

The recipes are Chinese Almond Cookies, with sunflower oil and rye flour subbed out for the regular, and Lavender Lemon Shortbread with different spices (ground rose petals, rose water, cardamom, grains of paradise, and hibiscus powder).

I cheated a bit with the shortbreads - I was not going to roll and cut them. That is a whole mess. Instead, I laid a sheet of parchment paper over a plastic cutting board, rolled tiny balls of dough, placed them, and then smooshed them with a measuring cup and a strip of wax paper acting as a non-stick intermediary between them. Works so much better than dealing with sticky dough on wide surfaces. The entire sheet went into the freezer, and then slipped off onto a baking tray with the parchment paper.

If you're like Cobalt and don't read the directions about using cold butter... Literally do not worry about it. I used the room temp stuff he set out, ended up with a very paste-like dough, and the cookies did not die. Just freeze it first.

The only thing left (apart from a remaining mixing bowl to wash) is to put the bread flour into the newly-vacated AP flour container.

I came in to this community at the end of the month (and had a very busy work and home life last week), but still plowed through a closet that we'd been wanting to get to for some time. Like years. My wife was off work last week recuperating from a (successful!) surgery, so I attacked this closet, which is in her home office.

I have no idea how many items I removed, but definitely hundreds. I had switched careers and finished a grad school program during the pandemic, and finally last week felt ready to let go of all the stuff from my previous career and from school. It was really cathartic. I still had (for you IT people out there) SQL Server 2008 manuals. Why! They've left the building now.

This closet will now be storing crafting supplies. I have a bookbinding hobby (mostly old, out-of-copyright and/or print classics and old theological treatises), and my wife wants to get more serious about her quilting and crochet hobbies. Now we have space to store those things.

There is another closet in this room that we will need to tackle next. It's mostly computer supplies and old video game systems, so I'm curious how that will go for me.

Here's the new crafting supply closet! May it remain not-cluttered.

I'm grateful for the March Madness notion. It gave me an excuse and motivation to just do this now.

We are in the final days of March Madness!

I am lucky that we had another weekend in March, since I only seem to make any progress on weekends :D

This morning I filled my car with FOUR big bags of clothing, 3 fake plants, 4 picture frames and a small box of random kitchen junk - and was at the donation center 5 minutes after their opening time of 8am to drop it off!

Rough count = 108 items left the premises today!

I would love to be able to say that I am done - but sadly there is still plenty of stuff in my house that I can part with, I just need to keep going :)

Anyone else have a final push for the end of the month? I am pretty happy with what I got done - and thank you [personal profile] vysila for putting the challenge out there - and posting reminders - it gave me the kick in the butt to actually make some progress!

I half arsed the March Madness, mostly by sorting through things and ditching what was clearly rubbish. What I have left is a lot of things that need to leave the house, one way or another. So, my goal for April is to work through the stash of things to rehome, and actually do something.

I've started early, by deciding that the pristine set of statistics journals are not valuable to anyone, and have dropped them in the recycling.

also on the list

  • single bed
  • old towels (cat haven?)
  • text books (high school)
  • ice skates
  • assorted choir / dance / ice skating clothing that the kids (now adults) have long out grown.

LY came to the conclusion last week that the only (realistic) way to make more space in the apartment is going to be getting rid of stuff.

Today I went for the fabrics. There are only a few projects that any of that fabric is needed for - the rest needs to go. All in all, I reduced it to about a third of what it was. Half is sitting out for donation, and the rest is waiting for a garbage run.

The closet and dresser were next. One bag for donation - out of the way.

I cleared out enough to convert one drawer into storage for camera equipment and miscellaneous dance items, which means that all of those items are no longer occupying surface space.

I'm glad to have a community for this!

Our kitchen will be demolished April 2-3, and we have to get everything out (also part of the dining room) by then. We have not moved in 30 years. So it's Significant Enforced Unluttering. So many things remind me of who I was as a teenager, as a student, as a daughter, as a mother: it's hard to get rid of them. I even hate trashing expired (very very expired) food, old notes, rusty cupcake tins. Sigh.

But for the usable stuff I'm trying to find targets recipients. I have help from a young person who works in a bookstore, (therefor deeply underpaid) and she took some, and I'm going to put some down on the street, but it's weird, people don't take perfectly nice stuff like a fleece blanket. I found a great local resource in Berkeley, Urban Ore which is basically a 3-acre garage sale! I feel better sending stuff to them than just trashing it or pushing to a thrift store.

Whew. That vent felt good!

Hey folks, I'm S, and I'm new to DW and so this community, which I was delighted to find.

My household is in the midst of a mass-declutter following some health challenges.  I love the March Madness idea.  This month we've been focusing on clothing, which we've reduced by half thus far.  It feels really good.

Next up: a closet downstairs that is still full of some things from when we moved into this house.  If we haven't needed it by now, I bet we don't need it.  I'm really looking forward to going through that and freeing that area up.

Before I forget - I counted 38 pieces of clothing that are too worn out to donate - they have been crammed into 2 garbage bags and will go out in the trash on Tuesday!

I also have a stack of items that are worth selling/donating - I just need to decide if I'm going to put in the time/effort to list stuff on ebay/poshmark/mercari or if I will just...bag it all up and donate it.

I was thinking I could maybe donate to a women's shelter - thinking that maybe they might appreciate some nearly new plus-sized clothing?

But apparently they only want absolutely brand new stuff - tags still attached - which I can see - but it does mean that nothing I have, qualifies.

Anyone else want to post their progress for this week?

Out of the house here:

  • one bag of stationery to someone from Freecycle (alas this is stationery I brought into the house for the specific purpose of Freecycling and I've got another two bags to go, but hey)

Moved to a charity shop box:

  • a slate cheeseboard thing I'm vanishingly unlikely to ever use and had totally forgotten we even had
  • a "marble cheese board with cutter", which I got from a charity shop lo these many years ago and have barely used since

Bonus:

  • my partner handled giving an old mattress away on Freegle, and it has GONE
  • and also okayed donating some fabric napkins we are also vanishingly unlikely to use

It's been a while since I did any major decluttering and thought it might be fun and motivating to make a game of it instead of a chore.

So, let's play a decluttering game for March Madness. On March 1st (yes, sorry I'm a day late) declutter one item. It could be anything - a piece of paper or a sofa! On March 2nd, declutter two items. And so on each day, until by March 31st, you are decluttering 31 items that day. If you follow that simple rule every day, by the end of March you will have decluttered 496 items! Isn't that an amazing number?

Nothing says you have to do the entire month, of course. I'm not sure I will manage that myself. But every item gone is a win, in my book.

Yesterday I decluttered an old worn out swim suit. Who knows what it will be today, once I take a look around.

What do you say? Wanna go mad with me this month?
