While I didn't really intend to make another post so soon, I've had a significant step forward in getting rid of things so I thought I'd keep count and then start again.

This time round I've got rid of 4 pairs of socks, 43 books, 1 bottle of handwash, 1 VHS recorder that worked but was no longer used, 6 magazines, 1 pen that no longer worked properly and 2 old diaries.

Coming in this week
1 wire frame for display purposes
1 box of necklaces to take apart for beads
1 book
1 magazine

So last week the totals were 34 out and 2 in with a balance of 32 out.

This week, the new totals combining with those give me 92 out and 6 in with a balance of 86 out overall. Not a bad start to the year, but still so far to go.

I've already made a start and put more things in bags and boxes ready to go when I see the people or go to the places they need to go and I have started another two boxes to go to a charity shop next time they're full, so hopefully I can keep going even if the numbers gradually get smaller.

So my last post here was on the 4th September, so it's been a month and while what I'm about to list below doesn't represent my full progress, it does reflect the definite progress.

Detail of Outs and Ins below the cut )

Grand Total = 160 (previous total out) + 40 (out) - 27 (in) = 173 out

I have also cleared the kitchen cupboards of all out of date food, although that doesn't effect the totals. I've also been 'cleaning' as I go, trying to turn some of the rooms into 'finished' environments. I have several bags of stuff ready to go to charity shops, but I haven't included the things inside in the totals as they haven't actually gone yet, despite my having put two of the bags into the trunk of the car. I have a pile of books and DVDs identified for reading/watching before being put into the 'to go' pile.

Thank you for the suggestions in answer to my last post of getting past the guilt to keep throwing things out. Let's just say that the problem isn't over, but that I am still heading forward which I'm counting as a win.

In other news, things I've actually let go or brought in are under the cut )

I also cleared the freezer of old/out of date/ freezer burned food and went through one kitchen cupboard to clear out of date food and re-organize what was in there. I'm not counting it towards my 'decluttering' totals, but rather in my re-organize my life and living space to make it better goals. Similarly I went through one box of papers and filed what needed to be filed and have put into a bag stuff that needs to be shredded/burned (although I haven't got around to the actual shredding/burning as yet).

So I am decluttering apace but things are slowing down now I've got packed up a lot of the 'obvious' things to go, I am, however, left with piles of things that still need to be sorted and things that currently have no home.

My problem at the moment is this - I have things that 'should' go, things I don't use, things I don't really need, but I can't just throw them out/recycle them/give them away because I feel guilty. I feel bad about getting rid of things that I received as presents or bought as presents but then didn't need, getting rid of books that I haven't read, even when I'm not thinking 'oooh I wish I had enough time to read that' (there are plenty that do fall into that category and I'm not worried about not getting rid of those, after all I'm decluttering not actually completely emptying my home), some that I have no interest in ever reading, bits of jewellery (the accessory type - not the valuable type) and just loads of other things - clutter.

Does anyone else get to a point where they think I've got rid of a lot and I 'shouldn't' just keep getting rid of things that I haven't 'used up'? If so, how do you get past that?

In other news I have achieved the following :- )

So I last posted I think in March last year and things were okay for a while but I've noticed this last week that things are beginning to look cluttered again, so when on Friday of last week I got a bag through the door from the Red Cross asking for donations that they would collect, I decided that was the push I needed to restart - one in/one out and one out a day (but in groups because I never get on well hunting for just one thing to get rid of).

There are now 2 bags sitting inside the front door (because it's raining, so I'll put them out first thing in the morning ready to be collected and hope it's dry tomorrow) to start me on my way - the bulk is books (22), DVDs (8)and items of clothing (11) but the grand total going out is 53.

I'm starting today with the things coming in as well (nothing but food which doesn't count so Yay!) and disregarding the fact that over the last few weeks I had had a bit of a splurge on getting books from charity stores and given by other people and buying crafting supplies. Today is a new day and all that, but the aim now is to try to stop the accumulation until more has gone out and things begin to look better again.

I've also got a book ready to post that I've sold on GreenMetropolis.com (a UK book recycling site) and a number of wool related projects underway that will hopefully see some of my crafting supplies diminish over the coming months (if only I had another pair of hands so that I could get through more stuff more quickly or a way to read and knit/crochet at the same time).

So Grand Total = 54 out

Last count was 177 out and that was 8 days ago. I'm so pleased with how the small empty box idea is working out. I've managed to take the larger of the small boxes (the one that held 12 bottles of wine) to a charity shop again.

Progress for the last week )
I'm happy with that. I've also partially filled the next box for my next visit to the charity shop, so all we have to hope is that I can keep this up.

Best wishes to everyone

Where'd the month go? So at last count I was 178 items more out than in (purely because I finally got around to taking several boxes to the Charity shop!)

Ins and Outs )

I've also acquired 2 small boxes (the kind that shops have wine bottles delivered in - one holds 6 bottles of wine, the other holds 12). I have one sitting in the spare room (a major dumping ground of things I don't know what to do with) and one in the bedroom and have taken to dropping things I don't want into them whenever I decide they're to go. The good thing about these boxes is unlike the last set - I could actually lift them when I've filled them rather than needing someone else to help me move them like I'd done with the last set. Both already have books in them that I'm ready to get rid of, so I'm hoping to make a trip to a charity shop early next month. That should help with the future of the count! Another plus is that I've managed to get rid of most of the clutter from the lounge and the dining room - it's far easier to close the door on the spare room and bedroom, or the garage and loft when visitors come, but it also means that I am winning slowly! (Or at least I'm telling myself that's what it means)

So I tried to declutter a couple of times last year and while improvements were definitely in evidence, overall things got the better of me and the process ground to a halt. I took advantage of the Christmas break to pack up a few things *grin* and today actually managed to get them out of the house and down to the charity shop and optician.

As there were so many I won't bore you with all the details, but I took all the old pairs of glasses that I could find down to the optician (7 pairs) where they donate them to an overseas group that give them to people in need of similar prescriptions who can't afford or don't have access to proper optical care. There were four large boxes of general stuff (DVDs, CDs, unwanted ornaments and toiletries amongst other things) that we took to the shop that raises funds for the local hospice. In all, 216 items went out of the house.

I have also made a decision to use up as much of the wool that I have accumulated as possible. With that in mind, I have turned 12 balls into scarves and 2 balls into a handbag. I will only count these as they are given away as presents. It's going to be a slow process but with more birthdays coming up, that's another scarf that will go soon and if I can put the finishing touches to the handbag, that's something else that can go as soon as I find someone suitable.

I shall balance this against the 21 items that came in at Christmas, 1 DVD bought since and 3 window blinds that I bought today.

So Out 217
In 25
balanced against 1-14 Jan which would require another 14 to go out.

Overall Grand Total of Outs = 178.

Not a bad start. I've already figured out what to tackle next - a bag of blankets that I think I might wash and give away if they're in good enough condition, if not, I'll throw them out.

I came across this link A Decluttering Calendar today in the [community profile] bitesizedcleaning comm.

Had a look at some of January's ideas - it seemed interesting so I thought I would pass it on in case it was useful to anyone else.

So there have been a lot of changes in my life in the last few months and they're not all over yet. Earlier in the year I put my decluttering on hold, but in the process I lost track of stuff that was ready to go that I'd counted and actually never left and the sheer volume of things that came back into the house from where I'd been working. I've also decided to make a third count - things ready to go - because last time I jumped the gun slightly in counting things that were in boxes ready to go to recycling, charity shops or whatever and some of them are still here. This won't affect my overall count - it's like a count of intent. I can't get to the charity shop weekly but I can build up a stock of stuff to take next time I have the opportunity and so on - it won't be transferred to actual count until it's really gone - LOL!

I've made a decision to start over with my counting. A fresh start to go with all my other changes :)

So here we go again...

The Ins and Outs of my First New Week )

Grand Total = 92 (out) - 8 (In) - 7 (1 per day to 09.13.11) = 77
peaceful_sands: butterfly (Default)
[personal profile] peaceful_sands
So I've not posted in a while and I'm completely lost as to where I stand on the in and out because circumstances have made it impossible to keep track.

I'm going through a major life change at the moment as I am leaving my place of employment after 12 years - let's just say that while there I accumulated a lot of stuff. I've made the decision to bring all of the things that are mine (as opposed to my employer's) home so lots of books and equipment have been coming this way. Part of me thinks that counting these as ins is slightly deceiving, because I had them anyway, I just stored them elsewhere for all this time.

I'm also having to move quite dramatically, clearing both my workspace while still working and organizing my household for both the incoming boxes and for the imminent visit of a friend - which means I can't just stack it all in the spare room until I get time to sort through it properly. I also have to sort through the work area as my job is being split between four different people, 1 brought in to replace me, and three others taking on elements of what I do, which means I'm having to organize a lot of things there as well as completing my usual work duties myself.

So for now, I'm not counting but once I'm settled into one location and I can spend time thinking of what to keep and what to get rid of because I really won't need it anymore, I shall resume my efforts with vigor (LOL). It's a time of flux, there are lots of positives about the change but they are accompanied by lots of stresses. For that reason, I'm taking the decision to be on hiatus from 1 in and 1 out, and 1 out a day and to do what I can, when I can, so that I can keep thinking positively.

Having said that I'm still putting as many bags of rubbish, recycling out as humanly possible and I'm trying to be realistic about things and whether I really do want to bring them back, but because of the time implications, I'm having to just go with 'I think this is for the best' at times.

Life has been . . . anyway, I've not done well on the decluttering!

Things in
1 DVD
8 Magazines (monthly delivery)
1 National Geographic that looked interesting
1 heavy shirt (as casual jacket - not quite what I wanted but all I could find)
1 jacket
1 bag (that broke as soon as I used it and now either needs repairing or returning to the shop chain - although the branch here didn't stock it)
2 tops
1 cardigan
2 pieces of fleece material (to make a present)
2 pairs of pjs (bought by Mom and probably soon to go out as they're not a good fit - seriously the top of the bottoms is higher than my bust and the crotch is at my knees!)
2 pairs of pjs (bought by me and they fit!)
1 hoodie

Totals for the in :- 23 (not bad considering how long it is since I last posted!)

Things out
2 t-shirts
1 pair of pj bottoms
5 books sold
3 books given away
3 books given as presents
2 bottles of shower gel (still working through all the multiple packs that I've been given as presents)
1 bottle of bath foam (as above)
1 tube of moisturiser (as above)
2 tubes of toothpaste (I'm currently counting these as I discovered that I had 12 tubes waiting to be used which is way more than I need!)
1 more container of fabric container
2 books returned to owner
1 large tub of old magazines, junk mail and newspapers to the recycling
1 bottle of patio weedkiller

Totals for the outs :- 25 (that one could be better, definitely needs some work in the coming weeks)

GRAND TOTAL = (Previous total) 344 - (days to Sunday May 1st) 90 - (ins) 23 + (outs) 25 = 256

Hopefully, I'll begin to get back on top of this goal to declutter as I really do want it to work. I guess it's a good job I made such a good start to the year.

It's been a difficult week with long hours at work and me eventually falling sick with a completely draining cold (not life threatening but completely exhausting and demoralizing) so I've not achieved as much as I'd like, nevertheless I've still been able to oust a few bits and pieces.

I'm not counting all the work stuff that I've brought home rather than doing there as once finished it will all be taken back and so totals for the ins are Zero which is good. Yay for weeks with no time to shop (unless you count the tickets to a concert that I bought online . . . nah - they don't count - anyway they haven't arrived yet)

List of what went out

7 box sets of DVDs
8 dvds
1 coat
1 jacket

Total for the outs is 17.

Grand Total is 344 (previous total) - 0 (ins) - 7 (days till next Sunday) + 17 (out) = 354

So I'm not dissatisfied with this.

I tried listening to all the little used CDs in the car on the way to and from work, figuring if I didn't like them they could then be added to the pile of things to go. It was okay for the first couple of days but then I found myself feeling really down and realized that it was because I was just listening to music that I'd got no real current affection for, so while this isn't a bad idea as such - it needs interspersing with more music that I definitely do like. I'd reached the point where almost everything was being added to the to go pile just because I wasn't in the mood to listen to it *head desk* It isn't just me whose music tastes vary intensely with how they're feeling is it and for whom music can set the feel for the day? Tell me I'm not completely losing it! (LOL)

I think this week I'm going to follow [personal profile] beachlass's example and aim to clear the shelf and drawers in the bathroom and maybe the miscellaneous 'stuff' that has accumulated at the bottom of the closet!
peaceful_sands: butterfly (Default)
[personal profile] peaceful_sands
RL has not been great, but I'm relieved to say that I've still managed to continue to move things into the leaving pile.

In

1 pedometer

Total of ins - 1

Outs

7 music CDs (charity shop)
1 pair of socks (bin)
3 books (given to sister)
1 candle thing (charity shop)
1 out of date book (bin)
1 puzzle book (done all the puzzles I’m going to so it’s time it went in the bin)
1 empty conditioner tub that I’d saved to store bits and pieces in – gave to friend who was collecting similar for putting glue in for the kids to use
17 work related periodicals (offering them to a couple of people to see if they want them)
4 unwanted bars of soap given to sister’s family
1 novelty mug and ornament
1 puzzle book (given to mom – she likes that kind of puzzle more than I do)
2 patchwork books (returned to owner with profuse apology!)
1 bag of old papers
2 box sets of Xena DVDs
1 box set of Jonathan Creek DVDs
2 box sets of LOST DVDs
3 containers of fabric conditioner (for some reason if I put it in my washer it jams up and overflows, so I’ve given it away rather than taking up space for any longer!)
40 children’s books

Total of outs - 89

Grand total - 263(previous total) - 1 (in) - 7 (next 7 days to Sunday) + 89 out = 344 out

One of the reasons I've been able to get rid of so many books is that I've decided that rather than try to sell the huge amount of accumulated children's books on www.greenmetropolis.com where I've had them listed for the last few years and very few have sold, I will give them to my sister and nephew as he is now reaching an age where he'd like them. Greenmetropolis has been great but over the years I've sold very few children's books and with increase postage costs, it's harder to make it worth while as I had reduced most of them. At least this way they've gone to an appreciative home.

So work wise it's a hectic few weeks, coming home and wreaking vengeance on the clutter is a relief! And boy have I been wreaking vengeance! I've finally got round to starting that cupboard under the stairs that has far too much in common with a black hole in outer space - sucking things in and I've got no idea what's in there! So far I've managed to find old papers going back as far as the '90s! Almost old enough to take to a museum - LOL!

Ins for the second half of the week - 0 - yup an absolutely brilliant zero. \0/

Outs for the second half of the week -

1 purse (charity shop)
1 pack of shower gel (used and not replaced)
1 fun to learn pack (nephew)
3 old appointment diaries (bin)
1 tape of children’s poems
1 tub of body lotion
1 tub of crème bath
1 book of children’s poems
1 pair of trainers that were uncomfortable and always gave me bruised toes - given to someone they will hopefully fit better.
7 Classical CDs – given to local school music Dept
7 music CDs (charity shop)
40 children’s books (given to sister)
2 tubs of magnetic letters (given to sister)
1 tub of word tiles (given to sister)
1 big bag of old papers (burnt)
1 bag of miscellaneous junk (bin)
8 old VHS videos (bin)
1 video (charity shop)
Total 79 things out

So the math work out is ...

191 - 0(in) + 79(out) - 7 (days to next Sunday) = 263

Grand Total - 263 more things out than in All this and I still haven't got to the back or bottom of that cupboard.

I'm worried this isn't sustainable!

For the first time ever, decluttering and trying to organize my life in the process has been a revelation to me. I've discovered that I can ease a negative mood by making progress in sorting something out and at the same time I have a tendency to be more ruthless and less sentimental about what I'm sorting through. Maybe that should be more practical rather than ruthless . . .

The other revelation this week has been that I was given a 'memory box' as a present a couple of Christmases ago and it's been in a cupboard and forgotten about ever since. I found it and lifted it out and have been taking it with me as I sort. There's a drawer beside the bed that I've steadfastly refused to clear out because I knew there were things in there that I didn't want to get rid of but that I didn't have anywhere better for them to go - purely sentimental things like a postcard my dad sent me, a bunch of odd photos of random friends from other places or places I've been to when I travelled, a picture my nephew drew for me and the like. As I sorted through the drawer, I discovered there were just a few things to keep like those above and those went into the memory box, almost everything else went into the bin or off to the charity shop - I did the same with the other bedside drawers - the end result is that instead of four drawers filled to bursting - I now have everything sorted between three of the drawers with one of them having just a few things in, two being 'basically' full (not bursting) and the largest completely empty - that in itself feels like an accomplishment.

I think I will keep the memory box or similar with me when I'm sorting further areas because it really enables me to prioritize and acknowledge that some things I want to keep are not useful or essential but sentimental and they still have a place to go in the scheme of things. I also have somewhere to come and look for good memories!

So on to the ins and outs )

Happy Decluttering to you all.
peaceful_sands: butterfly (Default)
[personal profile] peaceful_sands
So exhaustion and painkillers I've discovered are not conducive to efficient use of time in general (lots of sleeping and general spaced-outedness - which should totally be a word - LOL!), however, being in a bad mood is good for uncluttering. I've never realized this before, that being in a bad mood does in fact make me more ruthless about disposing of stuff and at the end of it I feel marginally better for having achieved something.

Anyway, the current standpoint is...

IN

1 Chinese wall calendar that came as gift with a takeout
1 book (handed on because someone else had finished with it)

Total in = 2

OUT

1 book (bought as a gift last year for someone, then not given as I mislaid it, so I gave it to them this year instead *Head desk*)
1 bottle of bubble bath (used and not to be replaced)
1 Chinese calendar (took the one I was given yesterday and gave it to work)
1 book (sold through Greenmetropolis.com)

Total out = 4

So previous total of 120 out needs some math working on it...

120 - 2(in) + 4 (out) - 7 (next seven days) = 115 more out than in

So current point is the house is down by 115 items.

I shall wander away now and hope to be able to stay awake long enough tomorrow to get rid of more stuff.
