Hi Everyone!

This is your check in for the glorious Sunday 3rd November. Have you found something to declutter? Made a plan that you can implement later? What is today's decluttering win?

Out with the old, and in with the new!

I emptied about half the refrigerator's contents in old food.

Grossness
Old pickles, half-used dried up jams, 'surprise! you don't like these' artichoke hearts, umeboshi and THREE containers of miso from five years ago (they're probably technically still edible, too! D:), and what used to be a bag of brussels sprouts but declined into a bag of mold...

I cleared out similar items from the pantry, too. All those stale sheets of seaweed, old bonito flakes, kombu, and expired Ikea gravy packets - in the trash!

The idea now is to ditch something if it isn't used within a week, and only have one item of each type in there at a time. If a new food is a slump and no one likes it? In the trash, clean the jar, don't buy it again.

I'm debating now whether to restock on the more seldom-used pantry ingredients I got rid of... It would be nice to have more umeboshi and miso, if they actually get used.

I finally got motivated to pack up and mail something to my son that had been taking up space in my basement for several years. It was a giant Yeti cooler, a retirement gift from my employer. Since my son and his family love camping and I do not, it made sense to give it to them. But still, it took me two years to get around to it, LOL! But it is now gone and that feels good.

Also, I decided, since pretty much everything I purchase as gifts for loved ones is done online and sent directly to the recipient, I could let go of my gift wrapping supplies. Gift boxes, gift bags, papers, ribbons and bows - and my next door neighbor snapped it up as she is in charge of wrapping up the gifts for disadvantaged children this holiday season. What a good cause, I was so pleased.

And finally, I contacted the local Habitat for Humanity charity to see if they would take a couple of large curio cabinets for their ReStore, and they will! They are coming tomorrow to pick up the furniture, so that will be two very large items out of the house.

It's taken me a long time to get to this point, but having the motivation to sell my house and move to something much smaller (and closer to my family) is really helping.

It's been a Week. Last night I finally realized it was Thursday and I hadn't heard from this wonderful group!

I put 2 things in the donation box. Eldest Child and I went through the closet and added 2 shirts to the handmedown box. This Child also added a shirt to the closet, one that I had been holding back to give away, as one to wear, now that it fits, I guess? I sent a thing to a friend (I've got 3 padded envelopes left! I'm pleased with this number).

What decluttering do you have in mind for the weekend? A quick pass through the junk drawer, a thorough cleaning of the medicine cabinet, or taking it easy to clear off one surface?

I'm probably going to take it easy and clear off one surface, to be decided.

The other day, I cleaned out a drawer and threw out some things. I found a velvet draw string bag, took a picture and offered it on FB, to remember--wait--Spouse said something about liking the idea of all cloth gift bags instead of the paper ones we use and reuse to the death of the paper. Took that offer down right away and added this bag to our gift wrapping stash. (I have previously given away the specific bags for baby showers and such, occasions we don't often attend. I'd rather give a box of diapers than clothes or a toy. Throw a bow on the diaper box and sign the card and move on.)

Decluttering is about finding what we have and getting rid of what we don't use. I'm glad I realized we could use that bag before someone claimed it.

(Weeks ago, Spouse found a CD opener that I was thrilled to have because I've been looking for one. It's now with the rest of the stereo things. I saw them in the store for a dollar last week. Mine was paid for years ago!)

Speaking of claiming, I am slowly finding a few things to offer on FB to friends, but I need to be careful. I have only 8 padded envelopes left! What a great feeling, that I have a manageable shipping stash and people are using what I don't need.

Tomorrow, I'll ship 2 packages, drop a few things off at a second hand store, and give some more handmedowns to a friend. I plan to put 2 foodstuffs in a blessing box, 2 things we'll never use but are perfectly good and still factory sealed.

Does anyone do any special efforts prior to the gift giving holidays? I try to get the kids to give away a few things they don't play with. One child understands I give away things they don't use or wear, the other is too young to notice. I hope to give away a few toys before more toys come into the house. We avoid going overboard with gifts in December, birthdays, and other gift giving holidays, but it's still a good idea to pass other toys along so we have room to play.

Huh. I have run out of things to give away on facebook.

Time to dig deeper. I am now pondering my greeting card stash--this does get used at least twice a week, but some cards have languished. Time go gut it more. And deal with the kids' coloring books, stickers, etc. Those bins are out of control.

Be gone, all useless junk!

Halloween did not result in all of the tiny toys disappearing from the house. I can save the rest for next year and store it in the box with the decorations, rather than in a bag at my desk. Bonus: less chance of the kids discovering this stash when it's packed away in storage. They are constantly in the office and poke around everywhere. And next year, I can probably get away with buying one bag of candy.

I have about 10 padded envelopes left--part of the goal of giving things away on fb was shipping to friends using our giant stash of envelopes. I have bubble wrap ready to head out the door tonight. The shipping materials are officially under control!

This week, I will send a thing to a friend (hoping to send things to a second friend while I am there!), recycle 2 electronics cords, donate ONE thing to goodwill, hope to give a small package to a friend in person.

Now... does anyone need "happy retirement" greeting cards? No?

Decluttering is a hard and long process.

What do you do for a quick win, a boost?

Clean off the fridge, notes and expired coupons? Deal with the junk drawer? Clear off the kitchen counter?

I like to gather and return library books. We usually have 10 or so and even just returning these picture books can open up space to put the rest of the picture books away, off the floor and a bit more organized.

- bits of Stuff! saved for wrapping (say, 4 items)

10 Feb
- cake carrying plate/cover

days: 42; items 326 (previous) + 28 (9th) + 3 (10th) = 357

[clothes and desk still not touched. But the back hall shelves are starting to have clear spots, so I can move crafting things from the spare room!!!! Sadly, now I want to do All! the knitting, which I'm not allowed until my shoulder heals.]

It isn't that the last week has been hectic, or anything like that, I just haven't made the time to find things to declutter, and made note of them everyday (or even go near the computer!). What I have noted

jan 21 (part 2)
- colourful, basic arithmetic calculator
- 2 tiny toys
- picture abecedary
- christmas themed nibbles tray
jan 27 - box of bottles/jars
jan 28 - box of books

The last two - counting them feels odd. The books were pulled out of the collection months ago, and have just sat; yesterday I took them to work and found homes for all of them. The jars I accumulate, and when I have a boxful, I advertise it. The last time I did a box of jars, I counted them separately, so I guess I'll do that this time, but the books are going as 1, because, really, that is all the effort it took.

Checking the throw out box - looks like an extra jigsaw puzzle, some books from eldest, a pair of shoes. Not sure about these, so not counting them.

Today is all about the fridge/pantry. So far, I've used the last teabag from one jar, used up the wonton skins from the freezer, and emptied a jam jar (the latter two go together very quickly to make jam tartlets). I'm probably not going to count any of the items, because the storage jars are still here, but I'm at least feeling accomplished!

days: 29; items 293 (previous) + 5 (jan 21) + 10 (jars) + 1 (books) = 309.

20th Jan
  • 3 floppy coat hangers; one child sized coat hanger [+4]
  • middle child school jacket (outgrown/never worn) [+1]
21st Jan
  • papers, empty box, empty paper carry bag (work) [+3]
  • many computer files (trying to get some spare space on work hard drive) [+0]
  • old birthday cards (3; youngest) [+3]
  • assorted items out of the freezer, including sponge cake from ???some time last year... [+0]
There may have been some other items - we got two near empty boxes out of the garage, put everything out on the table, and several items vanished; about a 1/3 went back in one box (the other has gone to be the new unwanted jars box) and back in the garage. And I'll have primed myself on some of the items in the box.

days: 22; items: 282 + 5 (20th) + 6 (21st) = 293

I've been keeping note most days of the items I've identified to declutter; and I've taken a couple of boxes to the op-shop/rehomed items to friends (14th Jan). I now have a single box collecting more items in the front hall, which is lovely.

9 jan - 14 assorted coat hangers: kids ones (too small), padded ones (never used) and floppy ones we are replacing; 2 oven mitts (surplus/deprecated)

10 Jan - one duplicate book

11 Jan - 1 t-shirt

12th Jan - ~1 dozen jars from the box out the front passed on to someone who can use them

13th - free standing knitting/crochet bag

14th Jan - glue sticks (~15); shoe box of assorted bits of crafting materials.

15 Jan - nightgown

16 Jan - t-shirt; 6  'custard cups'

17 Jan - ??

18 Jan - papers; kids sorted dead/broken stationery [uncounted, call it 2]

19 Jan - pair of shoes I hate; many dance items kids have outgrown, including leotards, shoes (will possibly enumerate these later); one pair of dance socks so filthy I told the kid to just bin them.

days: 20; items 223 (previous) + 16 (9th) + 3 (10th/1th/13th) + 12 (12th) + 16 (14th) + 8 (15th/16th) + 4 (18th/19th) = 282

Yesterday was hiking followed by migraine, so  I skipped a few things, like making the post here.

3rd January: 15 children's books
4th January: one duplicate book, a balloon pump, 3 kids books and my 2016 2015 diary [adding: this is the appointment diary, so not really a personal record]

Books are being picked over by friends on Thursday; diary went in the recycling; balloon pump might be taken Thursday, or will go to op shop on Friday.

days: 5; items = 101 (previous) + 15 (Jan 3) + 6 (Jan 4) = 122

books, pens

  1. With the assistance of the kids, four sections (of 66) of the books/games shelves were sorted through, finding about 20cm of Little Golden Books and about the same of other picture books. I have a couple of people lined up to collect some/all of these.
  2. tested all the pens in the pen bucket; threw out 4 (also sharpened pencils, but they all did what they were supposed to)
  3. sorted retail loyalty cards, binned those I don't intend to use and those that just ask for my phone number anyway.
  4. sorted the craft card/other materials left over from last Thursday's craft frenzy (dress up party), stacked the useable pieces for primary school teacher friend to collect this coming Thursday.
Note that I'm putting things that aren't rubbish in the front hall - I'm counting them as gone if I have a plan for where they are going. Not expecting today to be as productive, as I have a long list of 'argh, urgent' tasks to deal with.

days: 2; items 5 (yesterday) + 4 (pens) + 6 (loyalty cards) + 29 (Little Golden Books) + 46 (ish)(other picture books) = 90

I'm hoping to declutter something every day again this year, and see how far through I get before running out of oomph. I'm not going to look back at how long I kept going last year, but I'm reasonably happy with the way things went. But instead of counting 'today's' item(s), I'm going to count 'yesterday's', so that I can write the posts in the morning while eating breakfast (or, like today, in the middle of the morning, with tea). But enough rambling!

Items to go to the op-shop: 4 tupperware water bottles with leaking spouts (fine in the fridge, but we have other bottles) that have been replaced; a brass tray that never gets used and keeps making the drawer stick.

days: 1; items 5.
