Weekend Uncluttering
Sep. 10th, 2017 09:23 pmHow goes the war on Stuff! in your domicile this fine weekend?(we've had sun! And warmth! And leaving the house without jumpers, and the like!)
I made a big effort to reduce plastic containers. We have a drawer for Tupperware/freezer/leftover containers, two shelves in a cupboard which are higgledy-piggledy with take-away containers and lunch boxes and water bottles and whatever else fits, and then the overflow on top of the microwave. Everthing came off the microwave so something else could be stored there, so something needed doing. I threw out many many containers/lids, rehomed some, and generally made things better. There are still some on the floor, because I want to work out whether we need them.
Youngest also used the top of a pair of jeans (previously worn through) to make a carry bag - actually looks better than expected. They were working to a pattern for a peg bag that a friend needs replacing, but that had been made out of the legs of jeans, and the side pocket was a bit larger than our friend wants, but the back pockets are just the right size. makes quite a cute messenger style bag!

Date: 2017-09-10 02:17 pm (UTC)Mom said she and Dad will be unavailable the weekend their suburb is doing a community yard sale, but I'm welcome to come spread my stuff out on their driveway and try to make money appear and unwanted stuff disappear.
Tell Youngest well done! I did the same thing with my favorite pair of jeans when they became unwearable. I need to sew the clasp back on, again, but otherwise it's been an excellent, long-serving purse.

Date: 2017-09-10 02:22 pm (UTC)I gave away a book and some other bits yesterday - although when the person who had said they wanted them changed their mind about the other bits, I put them straight in the bin rather than bringing them home again.
Today I've identified another book to go (finished it yesterday) and have added it and another 3 DVDs to the going box. There may be more before the end of the day as I'm throwing DVDs on to watch while I iron and clean etc.
I've also been emptying (by using up) containers in the bathroom, now if I can figure out a way to get the lids off I'll be able to recycle them, but if not they'll have to go in the bin. (For some reason we are only allowed to recycle plastic bottles - not their lids or any other kind of plastic container - this is despite the fact that the bottles can be of any type of plastic).
Off to do more of my Sunday cleaning/clearing etc and to see if as I go I can get rid of anything else along the way.

Date: 2017-09-11 11:59 am (UTC)And thank you! Youngest is doing a recycling topic at school, and had to find something that the family weren't already doing, and apparently struggled, because everything the teacher thought to suggest was something we already do. I find it simultaneously disheartening and encouraging, that there are people getting on the recycling bandwagon, but doing things that my family did when I was a kid, 30-40 years ago.

Date: 2017-09-10 04:14 pm (UTC)I am super envious of your leaving the house without jumpers, though. It's warmer than it was, here, but I'm still not leaving the house without a hoodie and a jacket, at the very least...

Date: 2017-09-11 12:02 pm (UTC)Good job on getting things in the bin. Is it a 'needs to get done without being watched' or a 'getting a nice thing done' kind of doing while she's on holiday?
The temp on the weekend was only in the low 20Cs, but it hit 26C last Thursday!

Date: 2017-09-11 05:06 pm (UTC)Definitely a 'doing the thing since the one home' kinda thing! :3 Only so much you can get rid of per fortnight, haha.
Whaaaaaaaaaat, oh man, so jealous! I don't think we've broken 20 for like. Three months? Maybe a couple of days in winter, but honestly it's been. It's been pretty bad. It's noticeably warmer this week than the last few, and the highest temp on the forecast is 18. :/

Date: 2017-09-11 01:47 pm (UTC)I cut up a stained toddler t shirt into 2 pieces (threw out the sleeves and collar) to be rags or handkerchiefs. Runny noses appreciate very soft jersey material--I've cut up at least 4 other shirts for hankies!

Date: 2017-09-11 03:15 pm (UTC)I have a substantial Donate Pile that needs to be ... well, donated. Somehow getting it visible and earmarked for going and getting it actually to the donation store are two very different things.
I need to go through collectibles still. I've been avoiding doing it but it really truly needs to be done.
