The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes

Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,
Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon,
I heard a Negro play.
Down on Lenox Avenue the other night
By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light
He did a lazy sway. . . .
He did a lazy sway. . . .
To the tune o’ those Weary Blues.
With his ebony hands on each ivory key
He made that poor piano moan with melody.
O Blues!

Word: Egregore

Wednesday's word is...

...egregore

An egregore is a non-physical entity or thought-form created and sustained by the collective thoughts, emotions, and attention of a group of people.

Origins and Etymology

The term "egregore" comes from the French égrégore, derived from the Ancient Greek egrēgoros, meaning "wakeful" or "watcher". Historically, it referred to angelic beings known as "watchers" in the apocryphal Book of Enoch. In modern esoteric and occult traditions, the term evolved to describe a collective psychic or spiritual entity generated by the shared focus of a group.

An egregore is not merely symbolic; it is considered to have a form of independent existence, influencing the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions of the group that created it. It can arise intentionally, through rituals or focused visualization, or unintentionally, through repeated collective attention. The more energy, devotion, or attention a group invests, the stronger and more autonomous the egregore becomes.

Ugh, back in sanding hell. This time it's hell because I checked on the undercoat, and it says if you wanna put it on oil based paints you need to sand it back far enough all the shiny's gone. That is. That is a lot.

Particularly since I can't use the electric sander for most of it - the bookshelves are too short to get it in there orz orz orz. Can do the backs, and the sides, but yeaaaaaah. Tops and bottoms gotta be hand sanded. I THINK I got one at least mostly done, but I'll have to check tomorrow. I was wiping the dust off as I went with a damp cloth, so hard to say for sure if the shiny's all gone when it's still damp. :/

Also started repainting the bits of the roof that need it, and. Ugh. It's gonna take FOREVER, I can tell already. Combination of 'have to use a tiny brush because of the precision required' and 'need to concentrate REALLY REALLY HARD', alas, so there's no real way of speeding it up. Just need to keep doing it until the brain gets tired! And then sanding because that doesn't need brain, that just needs muscles. And then when muscles are protesting too much, time for a break. Yes. Something like that, anyway.

Thinking I might need to hit some bits with the paint stripper, too. Curved bit at the top, bits at the sides where even the hand sander can't get in easily, that kind of thing. Bleeeeeeeh, it's gonna be a pain I can tell already. But OH WELL at least!!! This is the last thing that needs this sort of treatment! Probably!

Tumblr backtracked on its horrible update, but I still want to use this site more. I'll cross-post things here, check my reading page, and my inbox some other time.

TFF is next weekend and I have 3 days off in a row today. What I roughly want to do in the coming days:

- I gave my mom some cash to do our laundry while I'm at work today. That's one important thing done.
- I have to go visit my father's house tomorrow because the stupid racist old man can't pick up after himself without a woman around, and his personality is too ugly to remarry a 3rd or 4th time. Many such cases. Hopefully I can get some cash in exchange for doing his chores.
- I want to see if I can transfer the contents of my current Ivy itabag to my new itabag. The con is my coffin shaped itabag was a good gimmick, the pro is the new bag can work as a purse and I want to advertise the most kino FE game as often as I can. I started last night and arranging the keychains on the insert has been hell. I don't want to give up and put them back in the coffin bag, but that's the worst case scenario.
-- (I should get more alien tape, though...)
- Tamers12345 has a new episode on Friday, so ideally I can catch up on the episodes by then. Otherwise I'm probably watching MLP Tales with a Bluesky mutual.
- I need to compile the stuff I want to give away and trade at TFF. A reprint of the stickers I gave out at Harmonycon should come in the mail soon, but I have collectibles and LPS toys I want to trade.
- I need to draw more :(
- My site is currently retired but I have a piece in progress called "Green Man Go Home and the tolerance paradox"... guess what it's about... I considered not writing essays anymore, but being in irl social spaces and Bluesky made me realize I desperately need my own area to air out grey area opinions. Sigh.

I was fascinated to read Jo Walton's post on How to read sixteen books at once at all times, because I have recently - and somewhat inadvertently - set up something similar for myself.

In mid-February I got fed up of all the half-read things in my ebook reader, so I went through and tagged a bunch of them - things I wanted to read, things I meant to get around to, etc - in a special collection, and then said "OK now you can only read things from this collection". I started out with 25 books, but added a few more either because a) they were new Dick Francis books that I wanted to read (2 books), or b) they were for a book group meeting that I had suddenly realised was approaching (2 books). Since then I have read only one ebook not in that collection (another book group! but a chapter-by-chapter one, so I don't want to read the whole thing yet), one paper book (oh look for a different book group), and a few chapters of other paper books, and the collection is down to 12.

It's actually been tremendously productive as an approach rambling about my reading habits )

In conclusion, it's been great for my reading but terrible for my booklog, which is sadly behind even though I've been working on it reasonably regularly.

Oh my GOD can it be spring yet, I am SO TIRED OF WINTER. There is a tiny tiny tiny pink nubbin of rhubarb in the garden. No asparagus yet. I cannot wait to get the dopamine hit of seeing my summer clothes for the first time in months.

The NT's production of The Importance of Being Earnest is of course a delight (Sharon D. Clarke deserves a knighthood and Ncuti Gatwa wears clothes, and few clothes, to perfection); [profile] velveteenrabbi and D's Pesach class is as excellent as one might expect; somewhere on this desk is an embroidery needle and I am convinced the gherkin is going to stab herself with it. Wednesday is actually largely unscheduled and I need only survive the conference Thursday, which requires me to leave the house at godawful o'clock.

I am looking forward to the three-hour train ride and the Dessa concert so much. And then I get a weekend in my favorite city! I have been promised brunch and a museum and rainbow cookies and bagels. (Promised by myself and I intend to follow through in every particular.)

  1. Allotment salad!
  2. Got Things Into The Ground (as well as out of it); I am as ever running massively behind but the weather was lovely and touching soil remains very good.
  3. It was warm enough to have the back door open for a bit.
  4. I am really, really enjoying the self-indulgent Very Expensive Lebkuchen I got from SousChef in the January sale. They make an excellent supper.
  5. Bloods taken today do include a full blood count; alas no ferritin (that's scheduled for... May? April?) but I do get a sneaky extra update on how my estimated haemoglobin is doing.
  6. libgourou continues to Work. I remain very pleased about this.

1. Good things first: I updated my soap opera today. I got a lovely Saint Patrick's Day card from [personal profile] dine.

2. I went running today at the lake, but it was FREEZING and my time was as slow as the first of the year. :( On Sunday, I picked up Minor's prescriptions, three of them were $5 each and the epi pen was...$560! I didn't get it. I asked the doctor to send it to another pharmacy and will use a Good Rx coupon to try to get down to something more reasonable. Epi pen. Like the thing that prevents ANAPHYLAXIS. American healthcare, ladies and gentlemen.

And the boys' father changed our insurance. So we used to pay $50 for specialist visits, but now Minor's 20-minute visit to the allergist was...$311. I feel like I need a lie down and a cold compress and smelling salts every time I get a healthcare bill these days.

3. I had an awkward conversation at dinner last night and I came to realize that I have no idea how Minor's brain works, and after a long, long discussion trying to understand, many questions trying to tease out his logic, I still don't understand him. And he said some hurtful things among other things, I am 'a character' to him. :( I wish I were a character in my own fanfic! What a wonderful world that would be.

4. I have a new lady client on Thursday and Friday. We'll see how it goes.

5. Diet isn't working. I am trying to track my calories but failing. I got a year subscription to My Fitness Pal app so I can just scan the barcodes but I am not doing a good job of keeping up with it. The good thing about the diet is I have access to a web portal with Monday, Wednesday, Friday new 20 minute workouts with the Australian/New Zealand young lady screeching at you (not the British lady with the beautiful wife who runs the programme) and it is strangely motivating to do it and finish so she can rest her voice.

6. I got the Netflix (for BTS comback!) and watched Kpop Demon Hunters. It was okay. It was a bit too close to home at the portrayal of kpop fans for me. I feel SEEN and I don't want to be SEEN. But I didn't mind them poking fun at the 6-pack abs phenomenon among kpop idols.

The original palace of the Chara was built nearly seven hundred years ago (around 300 years after the giving of the law, as the Emorians date it), under the supervision of the Chara William. In the earliest years of Emor, the Chara and his council lived in a small hall, similar to the Royal Residence of the Kings of Koretia. After a time, though, the Chara and his council fell into a terrible civil war. By the end of this war, the Chara had gained so many followers that a larger building was clearly needed.

The original palace was a one-storey building set atop a high hill, though the hill was lower then. Around it gradually grew the capital of Koretia. This palace was intended only for the Chara, not for his recent enemy, the Great Council of Emor. As part of the peace settlement, however, it was agreed that one-third of the new palace should be given over to the Great Council. Another third was retained by the Chara. The exact purpose of the remaining third is not known for certain, but it appears to have been for rites that have since died out in Emorian culture.

Within two hundred and fifty years, Emor had grown into an empire. With the arrival of a vast bureaucracy to deal with imperial matters, it was clearly time to build a new palace. This palace was built atop the original palace, the old palace being buried under soil that heightened the hill. So well hidden is the original palace that, within a hundred years, many visitors to the new palace were unaware that an older palace still existed under the new one. That remains the case to this day, though the present Emorian government makes no effort to hide the existence of the underground rooms.

The palace that began to be built in 568, under the supervision of the Chara Rowland, was not the vast, sprawling palace of today. It covered only the area that had been taken up by the old palace. This second palace would later be dubbed the East Wing, as the palace expanded.

Like the original palace, it was single-storeyed, but it was as high as a two-storey building. This lent it a majestic appearance. Emor's finest architects were brought in to build the palace, aided by the fledgling engineers who were beginning to transform life in the new empire. Arpesh and Marcadia, close to the mainland, were at that time only just establishing relations with Emor; Arpesh, in a gesture of friendship that it later came to regret bitterly, sent down some of its artists to help with the building. The result was what is widely acknowledged to be the most beautiful building in the world, as well as the largest and most impressive. Only the Daxion palace, a full six storeys high, comes close to rivalling the Chara's palace.

The Chara's palace has vastly expanded in the four centuries since then, but the character of the East Wing has not changed in any substantial manner. It remains in appearance and use as it did in the centuries of the Middle Charas.

[Translator's note: The expansive nature of the Chara's palace becomes apparent in Law-Lover.]

Not sure what happened, but. Jiiiiii. Anvil of tired maybe? IDK.

Anyway, got the rest of the tape off today! It took WAY longer than something that simple ought to, tbh, but at the same time I DID do a lot of coats so it's not surprising that the tape was uh kinda stuck down in places. Also it's just a pain in the ass to get it out from behind the picture rail, if it rips. (And it ripped A Lot, siiiiigh.)

Tomorrow, cleaning up the room - I have a LOT of stuff stored on the bookshelves, twenty bajillion different kinds of sandpaper, random tools, etc. - and then scrubbing down the main part of the shelves, I think. Sanding if there's enough time to start with the electric sander during the daylight hours, otherwise scrubbing down the top and filling in bits of wood that need it, I think. Current idea is to do the main part of the shelves first, since I won't need to tape anything for that - I'm hoping if I leave it a few days before I tape stuff up again it's more likely to uh. You know. Not come away with the paint underneath when I take the tape back down again. Hopefully it won't do that anyway, but just in case, you know?? Pain in the ass, so avoid if possible.

A didn't end up coming over, alas, but also not a surprise; she's going to visit her mum for a week tomorrow, so busy busy.

Anyway now is time for sleeping for me yes. Ugh, have the fan on and it's super cold, but I need it on because I have washing drying... luckily, sleeping in a different room, hahaha!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

So is this new Tumblr bullshit that breaks notes and gives comments on reblogs their own separate notes what breaks Tumblr (again)? If a migration happens and sticks, can it please be on a longform website like Dreamwidth (hi) or Pillowfort?

I have issues with Tumblr but making my blog deindexed and turning off reblogs on personal posts led to building a semi-regulated space that other sites don't have, I'd love for a move to here but I am noooooot confident. People still stay on Twitter despite Musk and a built-in revenge porn generator being present. Oh well.

I don't check here often, but. Ever since I attended that room party last month I had a bile fascination with /mlp/ 4chan culture. I legitimately feel like I uncovered a secret society. I'm trying to attempt a piece but this phenomenon was big enough to have several articles written about it. I knew about the Derpibooru conflict during the BLM protests, but there's an academic study about how the /mlp/ community is characterized by insistent emphasis on failed heterosexuality. (Catbox routinely goes up-and-down, so if you can see this I recommend archiving it. This is really, really good.)

i found out last weekend that anons occasionally post videos taken at their events in various /mlp/ threads and i just watched a video from mare fair of two dudes arm wrestling and one yells “I LOVE FLUTTERSHY!” and the third guy watching chants “MARES! MARES! MARES!” while they’re wrestling
#i found another one from pone voyage where the normie comedian on the cruise comments on the audience's pony plushies #i'm wondering if anyone recorded the “bring back christine” chant because i will never forgive myself for having my phone in my pocket then
i hate being actually autistic and not the quirky kind because i realize for the last month i’ve posting about mlp and anons. i’m aware of how ugly and off-putting it makes me look. i feel like i’ll be put on a blocklist if i post anywhere else that the mare fair animations are highkey brilliant.

    oh well. it’ll pass
#it makes me feel like an investigative journalist #i think it was last year i found out about mare fair? and it was via that awful photo lol
i’m too woke for /mlp/ but too chuddy for everywhere else. i’m falling down a /mlp/ rabbit hole for videos people posted of funny irl stuff and i found a dude recording himself making an anonfilly plushie in his room with sewing materials and an embroidery machine. and it’s like ok i don’t think i can commit to sewing but this is actually really useful reference. and then i notice a 3d printed white pony with no visible features and i’m wondering if it’s a canon character or

    i don't know what i expected.jpg
i think if it’s not clear i find the fan culture more interesting than the actual cartoon sometimes. it’s like it’s own little world completely divorced from canon. tamers or fallout equestria or people’s OCs or convention mascots barely feel like the same thing to me
#whinny city has really cute mascots that looked like a family but i was told they aren't

Last night is when things get every cursed -_-

    Your waifu is WHO?
    3/15
    oh no…
i think i need to stop combing /mlp/ archives for videos because i found some waifu tulpa thread from last fall and one of the recurring posters is an unironic waifucel for aryanne and claimed to have “married” her at a mare fair panel last year. i don’t think this is trolling. this is some dedicated schizo who even visited germany

wow i totally understand why mare fair is banning all politics this year HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! everything i read about this con is either really crazy and awesome or absolutely horrible
can i please become autistic about something else because i’m seeing things i could’ve gone without knowing
#i used to go on /feg/ when i was suicidal and now i'm on /mlp/ daily
i don’t think drawing the bad pony is automatically cancellable since it depends on context, but uh. i think if you own or create physical merch of it, you’re an absolute fucking weirdo AT BEST. i can’t believe what i’m looking at. do i even tag this post.
#i found a photo of a life sized plushie in someone's room #i swear to god i'm not “”“woke”“” or whatever but this is the craziest “legal” photo i've ever seen #my eyes are wide open i can't believe what i'm seeing #i don't think it's AI or a deepfake. i kind of hope it is but i can't find any metadata #it was apparently posted only once because it has a unique hash #i think i shgould finish my vodka

I am not looking at /mlp/ again for a long while.

But yes. I've been suicidal lately and tend to browse 4chan when I'm suicidal. I'm not sugarcoating anything. Maybe I'll finish my shitty "opinion post" before the con next week?

Main painting thing today was peeling off the tape from the roof and filling in any missed bits with a very small brush. It was. Uh. Well it needed doing but WOW it ate concentration liek woah so yeah it took forever.

Also my poor roof needs the edges done again, fuck that fucking crumbling filler uuuuugh. (Also there's a bit where I got undercoat on the roof and in cleaning it off wore a hole in the paint which is. Not. Not good. :|) Hopefully it can all be done with the paint I have but it was pretty close to done and I'm uh. Not sure it doesn't need at least one more coat given... all that. Sigh.

I also did multiplayer Terraria this afternoon, which was fun and not interrupted by an asshole cat breaking things! \o/ And I baked zucchini bread again. Hopefully A will come over tomorrow and take some with her, I have. So many zucchinis a-fucking-gain. (I'm also out of choc chips again. I just. Why. Why so much.)
