I'd say box and store them - I'm the kind of person, like you mentioned, who loves to browse other people's collections and find points in common and chat about good films/books/music. I also like to be able to browse my own collection by the covers and the memories they provoke - some films/shows have memories and good feelings beyond the DVD itself without having to watch the film for the good feeling to be revived (if that makes sense).
With regard to the rest, think positive look how much you have achieved and while it does take longer and seem like we're making slow progress, just keep thinking it is progress and it is forward . . . therefore we are winning! Little by little but winning.
