I've been managing to make progress without totally burning out, which is good; previously I'd get obsessive, get halfway through the apartment, and then stop.
I started by making a list of categories of things to go through, from thematic like "clothing" to spatial like "crap in boxes." I've been working on 1-2 categories at a time. Since I started....
1. Round 1 of paper-sorting (need to get round 2 done before March 15, round 3 will be done with the assistance of my mother when she visits).
2. Magazines. Mostly done, but I have a small stack I need to sort through and decide whether to keep in full or clip articles. Emptied three magazine boxes. This doesn't sound like much, but I used to have a dozen or so and I'm now down to ~2, so I'm winning the battle.
3. CDs/computer discs. Tossed ~40, mostly old backups and mix CDs. I'm now ripping the rest of the physical CDs I have, so the originals can go live with the rest of the collection at my mom's (this may sound like using her for storage: I sort of am, but the lines between "her media collection" and "my media collection" are fuzzy).
4. Clothing: took an entire garbage bag of clothes to Goodwill, tossed a bunch of falling apart underwear, socks, and jeans.
Currently I'm wrapping up the last of the magazines/CDs category and then I should probably do round 2 on the paper.
I also, after hauling them around for years, got two hooks put up to hang miscellaneous scarves/hats/etc. on AND set up my new printer...that I bought a year ago...and took the old one to Goodwill.
Right now I'm focusing on Having Less Stuff, after which we will focus on organizing the stuff we have better (much depends on how our apartment complex feels about wall-mounted shelving) and energy efficiency. Our goal is to figure out how to fit both a couch (my wish) and an industrial sewing machine (not my wish) into the living room, which is currently lined with bookcases and sewing supplies (our apartment has no comfortable seating for having people over at all). It's good to have something to work towards?
In:
2 pairs jeans
3 bras
3 tanktops
1 dress
1 sheet (for duckybunny)
2 DVDs
1 magazine (about organizing, haha)
1 bathmat
2 packages socks
1 pair ghillies
1 skirt
Total: 18
Organizational supplies in: (not counted in total)
3 wooden hangers
1 CD/DVD organizer
2 plastic envelopes
1 wall-mounted jewelry organizer
Out:
3 bags paper recycling
1 box to Goodwill (arbitrarily counted as 10 items)
1 printer to Goodwill
1 bag clothing to Goodwill (arbitrarily counted as 10 items)
~40 CD-ROMs
1 book
1 pair torn jeans to trash
Total: 57
Net: 57-18 = 39
